Staying Storm-Ready on the Construction Site

Severe storms can wreak havoc on an active construction site, causing damage, delays, and unsafe conditions if crews aren't prepared. Here are smart steps contractors can take before and after a storm strikes their project(s):

Before the Storm

  • Secure loose materials that could blow away or cause damage. Tie-down scaffolding, barricade walls, anchor portable toilets.

  • Safeguard exposed areas against unpredictable weather conditions with poly tarps

  • Clear site drainage paths and storm drains to prevent flooding. Check pumps and backup generators.

  • Backup data and inspect temporary structures for vulnerability. Ensure emergency contacts are up-to-date.

  • Stock up on fuel, batteries, water, and supplies for staff that may need to remain onsite.

  • Park vehicles and equipment in protected areas away from trees and powerlines.

After the Storm

  • Assess damage and take photo(s)/video(s) if extensive. Contact the insurer if necessary before disturbing the scene.

  • Make temporary repairs to stabilize any dangerous structures or materials. Rope off unsafe areas.

  • Clean up debris from roadways, parking areas, and access points before returning to work.

  • Check equipment and utilities for damage before restarting. Watch for downed powerlines.

  • Dry out flooded areas thoroughly before laying any new materials. Check for mold.

  • Monitor crews carefully for exhaustion and stress working in storm aftermath. Provide adequate breaks.

  • Update schedules to accommodate storm impacts. Coordinate re-inspections as needed.

Supplies to Have On Hand

  • Tarps – to protect any structures with compromised exteriors from ongoing weather

  • Contractor Trash Bags – to collect and dispose of storm debris

  • Work Gloves – to protect workers as they pick up storm debris

  • Safety Glasses – to protect workers from airborne debris during clean- up efforts

  • Garage Brooms – to help gather scattered debris on structure floors, and even to push shallow water out of structures

With advanced planning and diligent clean-up post-storm, contractors can get their sites up and running while maintaining worker safety. Staying storm-ready reduces delays and costly damage.
